You may know that I started this journey of supporting those with respiratory issues because I suffer from both asthma and chronic bronchitis. I am always researching ways that will support me and you with these conditions as well as other respiratory health issues. Below you will find several ways that asthma can be treated naturally. Let me know if you have used them before or are going to give them a go now.
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that affects millions of people around the world. While medication is usually necessary to manage asthma symptoms, there are some natural remedies that can help alleviate symptoms and improve overall lung function. Here are some proven ways to relieve asthma naturally:
Breathing exercises: This seems to come up as a way to support every respiratory illness. Breathing exercises, such as boxed breathing or pursed-lip breathing, can help relieve shortness of breath and improve lung function. These exercises involve breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth, while exhaling slowly and fully through pursed lips.
Yoga: Another one that has come up several times for other respiratory illnesses. Practicing yoga can help reduce stress and improve breathing, making it an effective natural remedy for asthma. Yoga poses like pranayama, which focuses on deep breathing, and sukhasana, which helps relax the body and mind, can be particularly helpful.
Eucalyptus oil: Eucalyptus oil is a natural decongestant that can help relieve asthma symptoms by reducing inflammation and improving lung function. You can add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a diffuser or a humidifier to help clear your airways.
Ginger: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can help relieve asthma symptoms by reducing airway inflammation. You can add ginger to your diet by drinking ginger tea or adding fresh ginger to your meals. Click HEREto get the ginger tea recipe I use almost daily.
Honey: Yet another one that seems to come up with each respiratory condition. Honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe a sore throat and reduce coughing. Drinking a mixture of honey and warm water can be particularly effective in relieving asthma symptoms.
Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like fatty fish, can help reduce inflammation in the body and improve lung function. Eating a diet rich in omega-3s can help relieve asthma symptoms and improve overall lung health. One STUDY comparing the effectiveness of Montelukast and fish oil supplementation (with a combination of 3.2 g EPA and 2.0 g DHA every day) showed that montelukast and fish oil were equally effective (and fish oil was slightly better) at reducing airway inflammation.
Acupuncture: Acupuncture (or acupressure for those who don't like needles) can help reduce inflammation and improve lung function, making it an effective natural remedy for asthma. It involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the body's natural healing processes.
Diet: I have shared many times how important diet is with supporting respiratory health. An anti-inflammatory diet that is rich in antioxidants that come from vegetables and fruits shows a significant reduction in airway inflammation and attacks. Avoiding dairy and gluten are key especially when in a flare up. With so many great alternatives to both of these things today, it can be an easy switch.
It's important to note that while these natural remedies can be helpful in relieving asthma symptoms, they should not replace medication prescribed by a healthcare provider. Always consult with a healthcare provider before trying any new natural remedies.
