How are things going? Have you had any realizations over the past few weeks on how your emotional health can affect your physical health? I know for me it took a long time to not only realize it, but also to accept it. What about you?
This is where self love comes in. Self love is the most powerful tool we have, especially when you think about this - you are the ONLY person you will live your ENTIRE life with...so why not love YOU first?
So, what exactly is self love? Self-love involves nurturing a positive relationship with yourself. This can have significant effects on physical health. Read on to learn eight ways on HOW self-love can contribute to better physical health:
Stress Reduction: Self-love often involves self-acceptance and self-compassion, which can support in reducing stress levels. Chronic stress can lead to various physical health problems such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and compromised immune function. By practicing self-love and managing stress effectively, you may be able to mitigate these risks. How do you manage stress?
Healthy Lifestyle Choices: People who practice self-love are more likely to engage in behaviors that promote physical well-being, such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep. They prioritize activities that nourish their bodies and support overall health. What choices are you making?
Improved Immune Function: Positive emotions associated with self-love, such as happiness and contentment, have been linked to enhanced immune function. When you feel good about yourself, your body may be better equipped to defend against infections and illnesses. Are you immediately aware of when your immune system is not functioning optimally and what actions do you take to improve it?
Better Mental Health: Self-love involves cultivating a positive self-image and building resilience against negative self-talk and self-criticism. Improved mental health can indirectly benefit physical health by reducing the risk of conditions such as depression and anxiety, which have been linked to adverse physical health outcomes. How often do you notice that you criticise yourself, even with saying "I'm so stupid" when you are learning something new or "I look terrible today" when you haven't had much sleep?
Enhanced Resilience: Self-love fosters resilience, which is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and challenges. Resilient individuals are better equipped to cope with stressors and maintain their physical health during difficult times. How easily do you "bounce back" in challenging situations?
Lower Risk of Substance Abuse and Other Addictions: Individuals who have a strong sense of self-worth and self-respect are less likely to engage in substance abuse or addictions as a means of coping with emotional pain or dissatisfaction. Avoiding substance abuse and other addictions (sex, food, shopping, gambling, gaming, caffeine, etc) contributes to better physical health outcomes. Have you ever noticed you, a friend or a loved one suffers from an addiction and you wonder why?
Improved Relationships: Self-love often extends to healthy boundaries and positive relationships with others. Supportive social connections have been associated with better physical health outcomes, including a reduced risk of chronic diseases and a longer lifespan. If you have an unhealthy relationship with someone, what steps can you take to improve your self love?
Increased Longevity: Studies suggest that individuals with a positive outlook on life and strong self-esteem may live longer, healthier lives compared to those who struggle with self-acceptance and self-worth issues. Who doesn't want to live a longer, healthier life?
